It wasn’t sure who invented either Chinese or ancient Egyptians
Records indicate that umbrellas were used to screen monarch standing from the sun
Hoisting umbrella above emperor was done by the servant of highest rank
Chinese developed waxing paper parasols to protect from rain
4000 years ago , Chinese made umbrella collapsible and then design changed a bit
In Rome and Greece , umbrella was used to shade women and also men attending open-air theatre
Umbrellas made of waxed or oiled silk, became difficult to open or close when wet
Only females used umbrella as a protection from rain
Umbrella was discouraged religiously
Jonas Hanway -a man of poor health carried umbrella for 30 years to ward off heat and cold
Gradually, umbrella came to be accepted by both gender equally
